New opportunities

It's been a true pleasure growing the business of PureTurf Consulting, LLC. The things I've learned, and the relationships I have built in this time will go far with me as I move on to new things in the turf industry. I want to thank all the people who helped make PureTurf a success, and many of you bloggers and tweeters had a positive influence in ways you probably don't realize. So, Thanks.

I'm happy to be moving in to this role as GCSAA Field Staff Representative for the Mid-Atlantic Region. In this new position, I look forward to serving GCSAA members and affiliated chapters in new ways. I will be serving the Mid-Atlantic Region, which includes Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, and Virginia. So if you reside within that region, I'll see you soon.

A new door opens, as an old one closes. It was a great run, PURETURF!

Masters tourney

Who are you cheering for in this week's Masters tournament? Tiger? Anybody BUT Tiger?
Make no mistake, Tiger is one of the most polarizing athletes in all of sports. Seemingly, whether you love him, or love to hate him, you will always be monitoring to see where he is at on the leader board.
This is not a Nike commercial, but regardless of you or anybody's opinion of Tiger as a person; Tiger the player is good for the game of golf.
Should be a fun tournament to watch this weekend!
Post comments below about who you will be rooting for.

New Services and JOE SCHMO!

That's right, I won! Thank you everyone for supporting the show - much love to you all!
Pittsburghers - stay tuned and check in to the site often. We are going through a name change, and a website redevelopment. THIS spring we will be offering residential vegetable garden installation! That's right, grow your own food, in your back yard.

The production team had PureTurf hats made for the finale party - sweet!

More details coming soon, so please check back often, or email me.

GIS, GDD, and New Services Coming!

What a great trip to San Diego for GIS. Beautiful weather, great people, and an exciting atmosphere. I hope everyone enjoyed their stay, and made it home safely thereafter.

Some exciting stuff is happening with PureTurf. The Growing Degree Day model is only weeks away from completion, and will be a nice tool for all of you superintendents in the Northeast region. We will be implementing a message board, and hope everyone engages in conversation to talk about what is working for people, and what isn't working.

Do you often want to set up research on your coarse to test new products, but simply do not have the time, or the resources?
PureTurf will conduct all of your on course research for you! Let's test some products, some fertilizers, whatever you are curious about. And it is all tested on YOUR turf, in front of YOUR eyes. We can observe the treatments together, and collect insightful data that will help you fine tune your programs. We can test on nurseries, practice/chipping greens, or on the course. Small, repeated trials will give us solid data, and could give you new management ideas and strategies to save money, and improve your playing conditions.
Please call or email for pricing.

Who is attending the Western PA show? Look for PureTurf's booth in on the trade show floor, and also come hear me speak about environmental management on Tuesday afternoon. Also, make sure you bid on the silent auction items. PureTurf will have a few services in the mix there as well.
Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

E-par, Joe Schmo, San Diego

I hope everyone is having a productive winter, and hopefully enjoying a slower (relative) time.
I am happy to announce that I have recently joined the e-par USA, Inc. team as a regional representative for the Mid-Atlantic states. These services will be provided through my business, PureTurf Consulting, LLC. The full press release, and more about e-par can be found here.

I have also recently completed an interview with Golfdom, covering my recent (and ongoing) stint on The Joe Schmo Show. A taste of that interview can be found on their blog. Tune in, and laugh!

Lastly, who is ready for San Diego!? I know this guy is. Does anybody want to meet - lunch, dinner, drink?
If not formally, I will be around the trade show floor extensively, so let's hook up!

Get in touch with me to learn more about e-par services, and to set up spring research, or spring consulting work. All the best to all the turfers out there!

Research, Conferences, Growing Degree Days

Happy holidays to all! What a beautiful fall it has been. I had a great time at the PSU Turf Conference hosted by the Pennsylvania Turfgrass Council. A great event for learning and keeping up on current events. I encourage you to check their website for the latest research and associated news. I also encourage you to become a member of the PTC, and help fund research that contributes to the progression of our industry.

Do not forget about the upcoming Eastern Turf show Jan. 8-9, as well as the Western (program not available yet) show coming up Feb. 26-28, of which I will have the pleasure of speaking.

I have two current research projects ongoing. The first is an extension of my M.S. research working with  fall nitrogen and a plant growth regulator applications. Can turf rebound in spring be predicted by an over-winter Growing Degree Day model? We will find out.

The second project is working with PCNB (new formulation) and will leave the details to that.

Who is going to San Diego? I'm looking forward to a wonderful show and great networking. Let's set up some meetings and chat.

Is anybody planning on attending any overseas conferences? Such as Asian Turf Seminar? Or the Bigga Turf Management Exhibition in the UK?

Lastly, I'm currently working on a Growing Degree Day model for my website that will be very useful for superintendents in the Northeast region. This will allow you to track GDD, or match up the numbers on my website with the numbers you track on your own.

Have a great weekend!

Cutter Cup, ASA, and Water and Turf

Welp! It only took a week to sit down and blog about last week's Cutter Cup, but here it is...

We had a great time going up Saturday and playing Plumbrook Golf Club, albeit with some dodgy weather. Sunday, the men of PSU defended their title and retained the 21st annual Cutter Cup - nicely done! We dealt with some serious wind conditions, but overall I believe everyone had a splendid time. The playing surfaces were ideal, and the greens were rolling "like you read about!" Special thanks to Bob McCurdy, GCS at Country Club of Detroit.

Next up, who will be attending the ASA/CSSA meetings next week in Cincinnati? If you are, please take time to come by our poster Wednesday from 2:30 - 4:30. Abstract can be read here.. http://scisoc.confex.com/scisoc/2012am/webprogram/Paper75470.html
If anyone wants to meet up for lunch or dinner, I will be there Sunday - Wednesday, so please contact me!

I was fortunate enough to be featured in a Spain based 'water and turf' website recently, which was pretty cool. Check it out here... http://www.waterandturf.com/cesped/
Special thanks to Jorge Palma of 'water and turf' for reaching out to me.

That is all. Enjoy the weekend!
